Welcome to the Department of English Language Education

Research and Focus Areas

English language education bridges the gap between academic theory and classroom reality. As a cornerstone of teacher professionalisation, we prepare students for the future through practice-oriented seminars, opportunities for action-oriented and research-based learning, as well as accompanying seminars for internships.

Our academic teaching and research are deeply rooted in the classroom. We ensure our students develop the subject expertise, methodological skills, and reflective capacity needed to teach English as a foreign language at the secondary level. Using collaborative and participatory research methods, we work alongside teachers and learners to tackle current educational challenges. Our goal is simple: the continuous, evidence-based improvement of English language teaching through an ongoing dialogue between research and practice.

News from our department

Looking Back on a Successful Information and Exchange Event

On January 26, 2026, another information and exchange event on the teacher traineeship (Referendariat) for English teachers took place in cooperation with Hanover's Seminar II. We would like to thank the subject coordinator, Ms. Celia Ball, and her dedicated English trainee teachers, including several former English teacher education students from our university, for their openness and for sharing valuable insights into the second phase of teacher training.

The event was very well attended, and all participants found the exchange to be extremely enriching. Many thanks to everyone involved for this inspiring opportunity for dialogue!

New Appointment to Our Professorship

We are very pleased to welcome Dr. Philipp Siepmann as the new professor and head of the department from the winter semester 2025/2026 onwards. We look forward with great anticipation to a trusting and fruitful collaboration!

At the same time, we bid farewell to Dr. Pascal Hohaus and thank him for the productive cooperation during the summer semester 2025.

Notice on Attendance Policy in the Field of English Language Education

Regular attendance is mandatory in all English Language Education courses. The development of subject-specific, pedagogical, methodological, and reflective competences requires continuous and active participation. Attendance is essential for constructive discussions with instructors and peers, as well as for the successful completion of course and examination credit. Absences must be communicated in advance. From the third missed session onward, a valid reason supported by appropriate documentation is required to avoid exclusion from the course.
